Senegal’s health workers urged to take up the challenge of MDGs
Senegalese health minister, Safiétou Thiam, on Tuesday called on all health workers to work towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the health sector.
Mrs Thiam, who was speaking in Dakar during the opening ceremony of the joint annual national health development plan (PNDS), said the results of the 4th Demographic and Health Survey (DHS IV) presented during the joint annual review held in 2006 were deemed to be fairly encouraging in the sense that they nurtured the hope of an effective attainment of the MDGs in the sector.
However, she noted, there was still a long way to go to attain these goals, especially in terms of the fight against maternal, neonatal and infant and child mortality.
“I am convinced that the choice we have made to draw up together a multi-sectoral road map to accelerate maternal and neonatal mortality is a relevant innovative approach that we have to carry out by putting in all our efforts,” Mrs Thiam added.
